Vacation Lake Home

The Control4 system was designed for ease-of-use

The Control4 system was designed for ease-of-use

This summer home project is unique because it involved retrofit and new construction for an addition that doubled its size and is located two hours away on a remote lakefront property.

The homeowners had three major aspirations for remodeling their home. Ease-of-use was at the top of their list, making our selection of the control system mission critical. The second concern was the ability to monitor and control their home remotely because of its distance away from their primary residence and the harsh Ohio winters. Their final concern involved minimizing damage to the existing structure while maximizing use of space and eliminating wall clutter. The Control4 was selected for the control system because of its retrofit capabilities, ease-of-use, and it provided high value while friendly on the budget. The system is controlled via a combination of three 7” touch screens, two keypads, and seven hand held remotes all using the same simple Control4 user interface. They can view the house via the internet-enabled CCTV system and control and monitor the HVAC settings using Control4’s web software. The system includes completely integrated CCTV, distributed audio, distributed video, HVAC, lighting, media system, security control and a whole-home wireless network.

Out of sight, out of mind.

There were several challenges on this project beginning with the fact that it was more 100 miles from our offices. Fortunately, in our sales process, the clients paid for a complete system design that determined the project budget and was carefully laid out in a complete set of Design Documents. As a result, the homeowner knew exactly what they were getting, the system came in on budget, and we did not have costly trips for forgotten items. While overcoming wiring challenges in the existing structure, we were able to accommodate our client’s wishes for saving space and reducing clutter. We were able to use one of the available closets in the basement level of the house to store most of the two system racks and equipment. The clients were thrilled that we were also able to locate all of the Control4 wireless dimmers in the same closet and control all the lighting loads in the lower level and outdoor areas with only two keypads. The Honeywell security panel and the FutureSmart structured wire cabinet are also housed in behind this closet.

Due to space constraints, the custom cabinet built to house the 52” LG TV had provisions for the subwoofer but did not have suitable locations for the front 3 speakers so we installed 30 degree angled in ceiling speakers that direct the sound to the seating area. The equipment racks include 3 Direct TV HD DVR receivers, a Sony 400 disc DVD changer, and Pelco DVR. These video sources are available at all 7 LG TV’s.

Our client’s lifestyle was enhanced in the following ways. The residence is the client’s vacation home, so it was imperative that they were able to monitor the home’s HVAC and cameras remotely. The client has the ability to get online and log into the DVR to see all cameras as well as monitor and adjust the internal temperatures in the home.

The Master Bedroom includes a “sitting area” so it was very important that the 32” LG TV could be viewed from the bed as well as the sitting area. We installed an articulating arm mount that allows the TV to swing completely around so it can be viewed from anywhere in the room.

The entire home is controlled via one simple user interface on all the TV’s, touch screens, and handheld remotes satisfying the clients wish to be easy to use. This is evidenced by the wife’s quote: “The system seems to be user friendly. YAY! The system is far more intuitive than our previous system.”
